Isha Koppikar

Name: Isha Koppikar
Birthday: Sunday, September 19, 1976
Star Sign : Libra
First Film : Kaadhal Kavidai

BIOGRAPHY

Isha Koppikar was born in Mumbai, India in 1976. She went to Ruia College in Mumbai and studied Life Sciences. While in college, she did a model shoot for Gautam Rajyadhaksa. She took part in the 1995 Miss India Contest, won the Miss Talent Crown and modeled for L'Oreal, Rexona, Camay, Tips & Toes and Coca-Cola, among others.

Her first movie was the Tamil En Swasa Katre opposite Arvind Swamy, one of the most successful actors that time. She received positive reviews for her role and decided to pursue a career in Bollywood: Her first movie was Ek Tha Dil Ek Thi Dhadkan (1997), directed by Shah Rukh Sultan, and has yet to be released.

Koppikar starred in some minor roles in Fiza (2000) and Pyaar Ishq aur Mohabbat (2001) until in 2002, she starred in Ram Gopal Varmas Company as an Item girl in the song Khallas!, which created her nickname Khallas-girl and caused her breakthrough.

In Dil Ka Rishta she played opposite Aishwarya Rai and Arjun Rampal and for her negative role in Qayamat: City Under Threat (2003), she received a Filmfare Award nomination for Best Villain. In the movie Girlfriend (2004), she plays a woman involved in a lesbian relationship and in D (2004), she again worked with Ram Gopal Varma in the prequel of his movie Company.

Recently, she played Arshad Warsi's girlfriend in the Salman Khan starrer Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya?. She is now filming for Farhan Akhtar's Don alongside Shahrukh Khan.
If looks could kill, this Mumbai girl who started out as a model would be lethal. Tall, beautiful, talented, the Khallas girl, Isha Koppikar shot to fame with her song number in Ram Gopal Verma's movie Company. Born in 1976, Isha had never imagined that she would become an actress. Instead, she had hoped to walk in her father's footsteps and become a doctor. “I did not get enough marks to enroll for MBBS,” says Isha, who graduated in life sciences from Ruia College.

Modeling assignments trickled in after she did a photo shoot with Gautam Rajyadhyaksha when she was still in junior college. Besides some prominent assignments for Ponds, Camay, Rexona, Synergy, Coke, L'Oreal and Tips & Toes, she did a few ramp shows. “I did only five or six ramp shows,” she says, “as I used to be plump in those days.” Such candid admissions make her the person she is.

In 1995 she won the Miss Talent crown at the Miss India. She debuted in a Tamil film, En Swasa Katre opposite Arvind Swamy, who was at the peak of his fame at that time following the success of Roja and Bombay. The film got rave reviews and she was expected to be a big hit in the south.

However, she softly entered Bollywood. Her first film, Ek Tha Dil Ek Thi Dhadkan, directed by Shah Rukh Khan in 1997, never got released. Then she was back to south to do her second film with Tamil superstar Prashant. She managed to do about ten films in the south. Her performance in Tamil film 'Kaathal Kavithai' fetched her the Filmfare award for the best newcomer in the south in 2000-01.

Though her work was in the South, her heart was set on making a name for herself in Mumbai. She did small roles in Fiza, Aamdani Athani Kharcha Rupaiya and Pyar, Ishq aur Mohabbat. But she got the much wanted and needed break from Ram Gopal Verma. Her item song ‘Khallas’ in Company became all the rage.

Some of the other movies she worked in were Sanjay Gupta's multi starrer Kaante, Plan with Dino Morea and Krishna Cottage in which she played a ghost. She was nominated as a villain for film Qayamat. In Pinjar her performance was good but anyhow the film didn't work. She was recently in news for her controversial film Girlfriend where she played an obsessive lover to her friend Amrita Arora and did some bold scenes portraying a lesbian relationship.

Today Ishaa Khoppikar has grown beyond being just a sizzling item girl. Ishaa is now setting to sink her teeth into some really challenging roles in her forthcoming films Inteqaam, Humraahi and Raakh.

Isha loves to make friends, is Net-savvy and does a lot of chatting. “I love dancing but no discos and pubs. I am not a night person. I start my day early,” says Isha, who paints and makes candles in her free time. She is not much of a bibliophile, but is at home with self-help books.

If there is something else this Konkani girl loves doing, it is gorging on her mother's cooking. She is a food freak who hankers after butter chicken, biryani, seafood and Chinese! “I can't cook, I just do the eating.” Her parents had always been supportive of her decisions. “My family is my biggest asset and my sensitivity is my strength,” she maintains.

Jackie Shroff

Name: Jackie Shroff
Birthday: Saturday, February 01, 1958
Star Sign : Capricorn
Address: Le-Papeyon, Mount Mary Rd., Bandra (W), Mumbai 400 050
First Film : Swami Dada

BIOGRAPHY

He's considered one of Bollywood's most affable stars. So much so, Jackie Shroff is open to fielding questions about everything under the sun including his take on the opposite sex, his own sexuality, his family life, his financial difficulties and then perhaps, his film career! This has been the story of his life, ever since Jackie graduated from being a small-time 'dada' at Teenbatti (in South Bombay) to a popular model, till finally, Dev Anand picked him up for a minor part in Swami Dada (1982).

Following which, Subhash Ghai picked him up for the part of an unkempt goon-turned-virtuous Hero (1983). This romantic musical co-starring Meenakshi Seshadri sent the cash registers ringing and promptly turned Jackie into the hottest newcomer on the block. Finally, it was Vidhu Vinod Chopra's Parinda that changed Jackie's 'wooden' image and even fetched him a 'Best Actor' Filmfare award! But Jackie displayed very little prudence in his selection of films and picked up just about anything that came his way (unlike Anil, who was always choosy). As a result, he registered more flops than hits many of them being B-grade projects.

In the meantime, the star had formed his own company, Jackie Shroff Entertainment Limited (JSEL) and produced a film called 'Grahan', which was directed by his friend, Shashilal Nair. This was three years ago. But 'Grahan' is still waiting in the cans for a theatre release. Jackie has kept himself busy doing everything from signing several Mithun Chakraborty quickies to anchoring a television show called 'Missing'.

It is also heard that he's is now prepared to go back to doing what he started off with playing the villain. Given his easygoing disposition and 'nice guy' image, wonder how he's going to fit the bill. But who knows, he might just pull this gamble off too like he's done several times in the past.

He was willing to learn from lesser known but talented musicians throughout his college days. Jaswinder Singh Bains(Jazzy B)

Name: Jaswinder Singh Bains(Jazzy B)
Birthday: Tuesday, April 01, 1975

BIOGRAPHY

Jaswinder Singh Bains (born April 1, 1975), better known by his stage name Jazzy B, is an Indian Bhangra artist.

Jazzy B is easily recognized by fans of Bhangra with his spiky hair and the range and depth of his vocals. However, his ability to be easily recognized has gotten Jaswinder Bains in trouble. More recently an incident occurred at Bear Creek Park in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada where he was involved in a brawl with two males of East Indian descent regarding the credit of lyrics on his smash hit popular song, "Soorma." 'Ghugian Da Jorra', his successful debut album, was released in 1993 and instantly made him a star. Since then he has become the best-selling Bhangra artist in the world, helping bring the genre to the forefront of the Indian music scene. He has worldwide appeal as he often tours Canada, England, India, the United States, and many other parts of the world where there is a large Desi population.

Music

Jazzy B has released thirteen albums all of which have been produced by Sukshinder Shinda, a talented Bhangra record producer and artist known as 'The Music Man'. Together they have created some of the most popular Bhangra hits, including "Ghugian Da Jorra", "Londono Patola" which is still considered a hit since It put the Canada in the bhangra scene, "Naag", "Tera Roop", "Sardara", "Dil Luteya", and "Soorma".

The 2005 Balle - Romeo Tour, which promoted Jazzy B's album Romeo and Sukshinder Shinda's album Balle, played at various venues around the world including Paramount Canada's Wonderland near Toronto, Canada which attracted a record crowd of over 65,000.

Jazzy B's popularity and success in Bhangra can be attributed to his style which is quite different from other artists in the genre. The music videos for his singles "Soorma" and "Romeo" were based on Hip hop music videos and featured Hummer H2s and the Rap group Takeova Ent.

Jazzy B has also said that the reason for his longevity as a successful Bhangra artist is that he works exclusively with Sukshinder Shinda as he does not want to flood the Bhangra market with songs on different producers' albums.

He has been compared Bhangra artist Kuldip Manak, whom he considers a role model.

Jazzy B made his acting debut in 2000 with a cameo appearance in the Bollywood film Shaheed Udham Singh[1] which starred fellow Punjabi singer and actor Gurdas Maan as the Indian freedom fighter Bhagat Singh. Their music was also featured on the film's album.

In 2006, Jazzy B made another cameo when he was featured in the movie Teesri Aankh[2] performing the Indi-pop song "Chuk De Punjabi". He has expressed an interest in acting and has stated that he would consider bigger roles in the future.

Star Sign : Leo
Family: Shomu Mukherjee,Mother - Tanuja
Address: C Block, 1st Floor, Gandhi Gram Road, Juhu, Mumbai 400 049, (India)

Her mother Tanuja was an acclaimed actress; Her father is Shomu Mukherjee; her cousins Rani Mukerji, Sharbani Mukherjee and Mohnish Behl are also part of the industry. Her aunt Nutan, grandmother Shobhna Samarth and great grandmother Rattan Bai have all been influential figures in the Bollywood film industry. Her younger sister Tanisha recently started a film career. Kajol is married to actor Ajay Devgan. Her uncles are Joy Mukherjee and Deb Mukherjee. (see Mukherjee-Samarth family (film))

Kajol has appeared in a great many movies. Not all of them have been hits; however, she has appeared in some of Bollywood's biggest hits, most notably the films in which she co-stars with Shah Rukh Khan: (Baazigar, Karan Arjun, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham).

She became the first woman to win the Filmfare Best Villain Award, for her performance in Gupt: The Hidden Truth (1997).

She retired briefly from film-making after the birth of her daughter Nysa. However, she has recently signed a film with director Kunal Kohli. The film is to be called Fanaah (Destruction) and she will co-star with Aamir Khan.

She has also appeared on the famous TV show Kaun Banega Crorepati (the Indian version of Who wants to be a millionaire?) hosted by Amitabh Bachchan. She was paired with her husband Ajay Devgan. They won ten million rupees and donated them to a cancer hospital in Chennai.

Kajol married actor Ajay Devgan on February 24, 1999. She is the proud mother of a baby girl, Nysa, who was born in April 2003.

Kajol pours out film after with spontaneous ease of an accomplished actress. Though severely lacking in looks and beauty than most other successful heroines, she is among the highest paid, in industry. It is her style, class and piquancy that sets apart Kajol, from the rest of her contemporaries.

Granddaughter of Shobhna Samarth, Kajol was born on August 5, 1975 to the producer-actress duo of Shomu and Tanuja Mukherjee. Tanisha is her sibling in a family, which has great influence in the film world. Famous star of yesteryears, Nutan is her aunt and Rani Mukherjee her cousin. Her childhood was laden with happiness and material prosperity. She got married to Ajay Devgun in 1999 and the couple have a daughter too.

Kajol had taken up film making more out of passion than as a natural career choice. Kajol never had to compromise on the quality of films that she takes up due to her strong financial background. She had made her debut in Director Paraish Rawaail’s Kamaal Saadana, as her co-star in Bekhudi. Though Bekhudi failed miserably but Kajol’s draw kept on rising. The eventful journey from Bekhudi to Dil Kya kare, shows the power of her versatility and as a matter of course she has won much more acceptance than her mother. Abbas Mastan’s Baazigaar, with a lot of help from co-star Shahrukh put her into final reckoning. Kajol became a sought after icon.

Yeh Dillagi, with Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan established her credentials as an actress. Her performance made people sit up and notice the spontaneity and confidence she oozed. She displayed the same intuitive flair for acting, notably in Udhar ki Zindagi and Rakesh Roshan's commercial blockbuster Karan Arjun. She's been doing varied roles like that of murdering people Gupt, getting reincarnated Hamesha and almost turning into a nun Sapnay after singing the hummable Aawaran bhawnre. Her Dilwale Dulahaniya Le Jayenge, with Shah Rukh Khan set her in league with the legendry film stars of Bolly wood. She won the best actress award from Filmfare for her performance in the film. She signed a string of ventures thereafter. Though the film is more than eight years old, it continues to make waves in the popular cinema.

Another great performance came from Kajol in Dushman with Sanjay Dutt where she had a double role, she again walked away with awards for this film. Her performances in all these films gave the regular cine goers the new uncrowned number one actress of the present era.

Kajol had more surprises in store, her acting abilities came to the forefront with Pyar To Hona Hi Tha with Ajay Devgan, this film opened a new chapter in her career. Her potentials as an actress were further exploited by Karan Johar in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai with Shahrukh Khan and Rani Mukherjee, Kajol gave her best performances and walked away with the Filmfare Award for the Best Actress

It happened in September 2005, when Kangana was drinking coffee with one of her friends at a café in Mumbai. Filmmaker Anurag Basu , who had already directed a successful film, Murder , was keeping an open eye for the heroine of his next movie Gangster .

It was there Basu spotted Kangana and called her for the audition. Despite the fact that Kangana is not from a filmi background and has no real acting experience, Basu decided to cast her in his film. The rest, as they say, is history.

Khalid

Name: Khalid
First Film : Mere Huzoor

BIOGRAPHY

He started his modelling career at 24, when it's time for most models to retire, or at least start looking for an alternative career. His Bollywood break happened with the movie, Joggers' Park, at 28. Wasn't Khaled Siddiqui a late entrant? "I strongly feel that kismat se jyada aur waqt se pehle kuch nahi hota," answers Khaled sounding confident. The confidence stems from the fact that though not from a film background his first commercial for Cadbury Perk was with none other than Priety Zinta. After which he shot for brands like ICICI, Bombay Dyeing, Maruti Alto, Ariel, Ponds and Gillette wherein Khaled worked alongside faces like Bipasha Basu, Mahima Chaudhary and Lara Dutta.

A recognisable face on TV, with his second film, The Film, opposite Mahima Chaudhary, Khaled hopes to make his mark as an actor. "The film is about seven guys who dream about making a movie. It deals with their aspirations and the trials and tribulations they undergo to realise those dreams," informs Khaled.

Struggling hard to get noticed? Sounds very much like Khaled's real story. Does he relate to the character? "I play an assistant director in the film who hails from a small town background and had to suffer a lot. In real life, my career has been without any hiccups. It has been an easy and smooth journey so far," says Khaled. But that does not mean he didn't have to prepare himself for the role at all. "Nothing is easy," he is quick to add.
Working with Mahima was fun, he says, adding that he thoroughly enjoyed the shooting stint. "I knew her from our modelling days and discovered that not much had changed with her. In fact, we have matured and knew better how to interact with others this time," says the actor who counts Ram Gopal Varma, Subhash Ghai and Shyam Benegal amongst his all time favourite directors.

But is there a dream role for him? "No, I'd like to experiment and play all kinds of roles. I don't want to limit myself as an actor." Khaled is hopeful that the audience will wake up to his acting potential after the release of The Film. "We saw the monoprint with the songs and visuals. It has really shaped up well. We have done our best and hope you like it."

Next for him is Prakash Jha's Apaharan and Ho Sakta Hai with Victor Banerjee. He's hopeful to get more offers.

Kishore kumar*

Name: Kishore kumar*
Birthday: Sunday, August 04, 1929
Star Sign : Leo
Family: Abhas Ganguly
First Film : Shikari

BIOGRAPHY

Versatile singer and a man of different moods, Kishore Kumar has became a legend of Hindi film world with his eccentric, romantic,
the depth, emotion and mettle
in his voice that gave us so many songs that are beyond par excellence. In 1949, he came to Bombay from his native place in Khandwa (M.P),
hoping that his elder
brother and film star Ashok Kumar would introduce him to his idol - singer K L Saigal. He too wanted to be a singer, but the film industry
conned him into becoming an actor.

Though Kishore Kumar hated being ordered around by directors, (who according to him didn't know their jobs most of the time) the hits followed.
New Delhi (1956), Asha
(1957), Chalti Ka Naam Gadi (1958), Jhumroo (1961), Half Ticket (1962), Shreeman Funtoosh (1956) and Padosan (1968). All time blockbusters,
that managed to tie down
Kishore to a busy acting schedule, so much so, that for a song in Sharaarat, Mohd Rafi, actually had to provide playback for him.

In an industry, where comedy was seen as a filler or diversion from the main plot, there emerged in the form of Kishore,
a hero who made comic acting an evolved art.
Laughing, singing and dancing, Kishore was the complete comic hero, comparable to the likes of Bob Hope and Danny Kaye. And his
unconventional looks
and personality only added to the fun that audiences had when watching him. Even while playing second fiddle to the hero, Kishore
added an extra zing to the film.
Whether it was the pan chewing ustad of Padosan, who takes on the carnatic maestro Mahmood in a musical duel or in his usually funny
song and dance routine in movies like Miss Mary.

As a singer, he was unparalleled: his songs coming as naturally as laughter. His ability to yodel perfectly, freak off into nonsense
rhyme and still return to the original tune
was exhilarating. For those used to straightforward singing, this was heady wine. And Sachin Deb Burman, that talented music director,
made him a constant playback for Dev
Anand. Who does not hum those tunes even today? From Paying Guest (Mana janab ne pukara nahin) to Nau Do Gyarah (Hum hain raahi pyar ke)
to Funtoosh (Ai meri topi palat ke aa),
he weaved his spell. And in the films in which he starred, from Bandi, Bhai Bhai, Looko Chhori (Bengali), Shararat, New Delhi,
he yodelled his way through; Eena meena deeka, Mera naam
Abdul Rahman, CAT Cat, Hum to muhabbat karega and the list is too long to recollect. He is, of course, best remembered for his own
production Chalti ka Naam Gadi, where he starred with
his brothers Ashok Kumar and Anoop Kumar and his wife then, the fabulous Madhubala.

Kishore produced, directed, acted in and composed the music for Jhumroo, an enormous achievement.
He then made an uncharacteristically serious film on the relationship between a father
and his dumb son - 'Door Gagan ki Chhaon mein'. This 1964 film that Kishore directed, produced,
scripted and scored music for was a sensitive offbeat drama about a war hero Shankar (Kishore Kumar)
who returns home from battle to find that his family has perished in a fatal fire. Only his young son (played by his real life son - Amit)
has survived. The film proceeds to sensitively
delineate the father's efforts to draw his shell-shocked son out of his self-imposed exile. This film was a classic in the genre of war movies,
and preceded a spate of Vietnam
war inspired films of Hollywood. Critics and fans were astounded by the film which had the unstoppable funster in a serious introspective,
brilliantly sensitive portrayal. 'Door
Gagan Ki Chhaon Mein' went on to win many national and international awards. Its critical success was perhaps what motivated the making of
'Door Ka Rahi', another Kishore
creation that throws up touches of stylistic tranquility of 'Door Gagan Ki Chhaon Mein'.
The heightened expectations of his fans, of Kishore as a director, were never ever
fulfilled by his other films - 'Badhti Ka Naam Daadhi' (1978) 'Zindagi' (1981) or 'Door Wadiyon Mein'
(1982) The last was another surprise from the singing, dancing vocal comic - a song-less film.

The songs, of course, were immortal, tuned by S D Burman. Baboo samjho ishare (with Manna Dey), Ek ladki bheegi bhagi si,
Paanch rupaiya barah anna, Jaate the Japan
pahoonch gaye Cheen (again with Manna Dey) and Haal kaisa hai janab ka (with Asha Bhonsle). This surely was the most enjoyable
freewheeling knockabout ever made in
India. In other films too, he clowned and sang: In I S Johar's Bewaqoof and of course that great comedy Padosan, with Sunil Dutt,
Mehmood and Saira Bano are some of the
all time great comedies in which Kishore acted.

There are any number of Kishore Kumar tales to be heard in Mumbai. The best is how when he was shooting for a Satyen Bose film in Mahableshwar,
he was supposed to
come out of a bungalow, get into a car and go past the gate. After a couple of retakes, Kishore got into the car
and drove past straight to Bombay while the entire unit waited
for him to return. Night fell, but there was no sign of the man. To make matters worse, the car belonged to the producer.

People say he was a miser, screamed that the taxmen took away all his earnings. But very few people know that Kishore Kumar
secretly sent money regularly, month after
month, to the widow of Arun Kumar Mukherjee. In fact, the truth is, she depended entirely on the money Kishore sent her.
She herself confessed this to a friend. If Kishore
had not helped, it is likely that the family would probably have been wiped out. Incidentally, Arun Kumar Mukherjee is
the same person who used to visit the Gangulys at
Khandwa and who was one of the first persons to appreciate Kishore Kumar's singing talent. Kishore Kumar sent money to a few other people as well.
Nobody knows who
they are and he himself kept the matter under wraps. He charged one rupee less than Lata Mangeshkar to show his respect for her and her seniority.
And he talked of going
back to Khandwa to become a farmer.

There is a story of Kishore Kumar that reveals another side to him. Bipin Gupta, known for
his many character roles in the Hindi movies produced the film Dal Mein Kala that was
released in 1964. Satyen Bose was its director. The film starred Nimii and Kishore Kumar.
Bipin Gupta was short of money and was compelled to cancel the shooting. Kishore Kumar,
seeing the plight Gupta was in, ordered his driver Abdul to go home and bring Rs 20,000 in cash immediately.
That was the amount Gupta needed. As soon as the money arrived, Kishore Kumar
gave it to him personally. The film incidentally flopped, practically ruining Bipin Gupta.

He had angered former Prime Minister of India, Mrs. Indira Gandhi, when he refused to sing for the
"Emergency Propoganda" during the emergency declared by her, and as a result all songs sung
by him were banned by the national media at that time.

He shunned people, never smoke or drank and had only few friends. Kishore married some of the most beautiful
women in India. Ruma Guha-Thakurta (the mother of his singer son Amit Kumar) was
his first wife, then the beautiful Madhubala, Yogita Bali and finally Leena Chandavarkar (mother of his yongest son Summet.

Kishore Kumar was unstinting in crediting his popularity to the Burmans - father and son.
It was S.D. Burman who made Kishore, the superstar singer of the seventies, when he chose him to sing
'Roop tera mastana, pyar mera diwana' for Rajesh Khanna in the superhit Aradhana. This together with the song
that set the trend of wooing, 'Mere sapnon ki rani, kab ayegi tu' made Kishore the
voice of the 'Chinky eyed sensation,' 'the chocolate faced hero' Rajesh Khanna. S.D. Burman did more than just make
Kishore a superstar singer. He helped him out when his marriage to Ruma
Devi caused a split in the family, by making him sing. 'Qusoor apka' in Bahaar and the song went to become a hit.

S.D. Burman made him the voice of Dev Anand much before Rajesh Khanna came on the scene. In Guide, Jewel Thief,
Paying Guest and Munimji under S.D. Burman's expert hands,
Kishore's talent was honed and fine tuned. 'Maana janab ne pukar nahin' and 'Gaata rahe mera dil' were some evergreen
hits that Kishore sang for debonair Dev.

Another composer who placed implacable faith in Kishore was S.D. Burman's son, Rahul Dev Burman. The lack of basic training
in music, never hampered Kishore's intuitive feel and
enormous talent for music. After the decline of Rajesh Khanna, R.D. Burman and other composers were able to successfully
exploit Kishore Kumar's voice for the superstar of all time
Amitabh Bachchan. For Don, Sharabi, Mili, Amar Akbar Anthony, the list is endless. Kishore Kumar's ability to modulate his
voice to suit the personality of his hero, and the ethos of the
situation, was what made him a star. He was as much the voice of the dapper Dev, the adorable Rajesh as well as the aggressive
angry young man Amitabh Bachchan.

Quite a few, who have known Kishore Kumar, put forward the view that he was not really eccentric but a very serious person at heart,
very earnest about what he wanted to do.
Unfortunately, he was not always understood. As Mehmood characterizes it: "He was neither eccentric not miserly, as some people seem
to think. He was in fact a genius.
He was a louder version of Raj Kapoor, an all-rounder who could handle every aspect of cinema but and all-rounder who enjoyed making
noise and being notices..."
Kalyanji, who takes a dispassionate view, says, "He had his moods, but that is an artiste's privilege. He had to be treated like a child
if you wanted to get him to do
anything...To get him to do what you wanted you had to tell him exactly the opposite." Anandji's version is more matter-of-fact. He says:
"Kishore Kumar wasn't the
least eccentric. It's just that he didn't like people cheating him of his dues."

Kishore Kumar's ardent desire in his last days was to return to his native Khandwa,

BIOGRAPHY

With just three films, Konkona Sen is being looked as the most promising new actress in Kolkata. Konkona Sen, who won the National award for 'Mr and Mrs Iyer', now replaces Rani Mukherjee in the new film that is going to be based on Jhumpa Lahiris book. Initially, Rani Mukherjee was considered for the role because Meera Nair was very much impressed with her performance as the battered wife in 'Yuva'. It now looks as if Meera Nair is more impressed by Konkona Sen. Rani was unable to act in the film because she wasn't able to set aside call sheets for the film. Rani is caught up with another problem these days- gossips about a 'relationship' with sitting MP and actor Govinda. There are talks that the two are living together these days. Rani Mukherjee has strongly denied these rumors. Uncertainty and gossips - two permanent features of the film industry.

BIOGRAPHY

Kunal Ganjawala is an Indian playback singer, primarily in Bollywood. He is the man whose voice mesmerised listeners with its sensuous appeal in Murder's "Bheege Honth", made you sway with "Channa Ve", and sets your tap toes tapping to "Kaal Dhamal", an item song in Kaal. This is what Kunal has to say "I was not even a bathroom singer. I began singing only when I was ragged by my seniors as a fresher in Elphinston College, Mumbai. I was passing by them whistling a tune when a few of them caught hold of me and commanded, `Sing a song'. I was shocked. I said I never sang in my life. They said, `Jhoot bolta hai. When he can whistle tunes so well, why can't he sing?' They caught hold of my neck saying, they would throttle me if I didn't. With great difficulty I sang "Nazar ke samne" (Aashiqui) and "Ik din bik jayega" (Dharam Karam). They spared me then but made me sing in college festivals later."

Child actors generally grow up to be unsuccessful heroes but Kunal Khemu, who has just made a deep impact in his debut film "Kalyug", seems to be an exception.

Remember Jugal Hansraj, the scene-stealer from Shekhar Kapoor's "Masoom" who all but vanished from the scene. In spite of attempts to prop up his career by Aditya Chopra in "Mohabbatein" and "Salaam Namaste", Jugal is today reduced to doing television serials.

As a child actor, Kunal also made a lasting impression in Mahesh Bhatt's "Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke" and later the memorable autobiographical "Zakhm" where he played Bhatt as a child. The entire film revolved around Khemu's character.

Ten years ago, when Lisa ray flew to India from Canada, where she had been raised, little did she know what future had in store for her. Her visit to India—to meet her near and dear ones—proved to be a turning point in her life and career.

Lisa's chiseled face and sylph-like figure caught the attention of the modeling world and soon she got the offer for an ad for a well-known fabrics company. Since then there has been no looking back for Lisa as she went on to become one of the most sought after models who could steal the entire show with her shimmering presence.

Madhuri Dixit

Name: Madhuri Dixit
Birthday: Monday, May 15, 1967
Star Sign : Taurus
Family: Father: Shankar Dixit, Mother: Snehlata Dixit
First Film : Abodh

BIOGRAPHY

Madhuri Dixit was a top-line model in India before entering the Hindi film industry. She was launched by the Rajshri's with Abodh in 1984. But recognition came to her with the Ek-do-teen dance number in Tezaab (1988), which launched her as a top actress. Her performance in Hum Aapke Hain Kaun (1994) was the crowning glory of her career. Her power and security lie in the knowledge that there cannot be another Madhuri Dixit. But to reach this pinnacle of success, the journey from middle-class J.B.Nagar to posh Iris Park, has been full of twists and turns. Madhuri recalls the good, the bad and sometimes humorous path she had to tread all by herself.

Who would dare to call her a middle-class Maharashtrian mulgi? These five-feet-four- inches of proportionate dynamite have been moulded on memories of Madhubala's allure and the classic looks of Suchitra Sen. Having joined films for a lark and then getting hooked, she didn't foresee the heartbreak. Her first few attempts could well have given her a one-way ticket to oblivion. But suddenly, the industry czars discovered the face to launch a 100 films. A gregarious, mischievous girl, she was always up to something. She recalls her childhood days, "I was totally unruly and disorganised. I would throw the family and the house into an uproar before I left for school. I was such a chatterbox, I wouldn't stop talking till I had said all that I wanted to." What a contrast to her now cool, poised and quiet image!
"In school I was once punished for aping a nun who sang soprano. On another occasion, I thoroughly embarrassed my mother. At three, I was asked to sing a classical song at a family get together. Instead, I broke into a cabaret number from a film, replete with all the jhataks and mataks! I guess therein lay the dormant beginnings of 'Ek, Do, Teen'..."

Those numbers, were also the beginning of her acquiring a multitude of fans that now touches a billion over five continents.

"After Abodh, I toyed with the idea of doing just a few roles here and there. I had plans to do anything from genetic research to hotel management. Acting was going to be just a hobby, another dimension to my personality. But I suppose my indecisiveness about a career in academics or a career in films, had me leaning towards the latter. I don't know whether it's called fate or whatever. I only know I had a bee in my bonnet about doing films."

Her initial foray into films though, began with several washouts.
Madhuri is one of the greatest stars of Bombay Film industry, which shined brightest during the last part of eighties and first half of nineties. She was born on May 15, 1967 to mother Snehlata and father Shankar in Maharashtra. She has two sisters and a brother. Her nickname is Bubbly.

Madhuri wanted to be a microbiologist but got into films with an offer from Rajshri Films in Abodh in 1984. Her joining the films became one of the most important incidents of Bollywood, as it heralded the rise of one of the most spectacular career in its history. Abodh and a couple of other non-descript roles did not get her going straight away.

She kept on getting small time roles in insignificant movies but could not make a break till Shubash Ghai spotted her. She did a tiny dance performance in his production 'Karma', but it was omitted from the final footage, with a promise from Ghai that he will give her major roles in his forthcoming films. Though he did pitch her in his 'Uttar Dakhin' and Anil Kapoor starrer 'Ram Lakhan' but by that time she had already taken the industry by storm in N. Chandra’s 'Tezaab'. Over night Ek do teen was on everybody’s lips and Madhuri was a hot rage amongst gossip groups. Tezaab was a golden jubilee hit.

A superb performance in Dil (1990) not only brought her the First FilmFare award but also a long association with Indra Kumar with whom she produced more blockbusters in Beta (1991) for which she won FilmFare Award and Raja (1995). Sajan and Khalnayak with Sanjay Dutt in the early ninties give ample testimony of her great acting skills, she carried in her bosom. 1990 onwards, a hit film per year followed including Kishan Kanhaiya, Saajan, Khalnayak, Parinda, 100 Days, Prahaar, Prem Pratigaya to name a few. The ever upwardly mobile career graph of Madhuri met its culmination in Hum Apke Hain Kaun. The incredible success of this family drama with Salman Khan not only made her a household name in India, but also earned her the sobriquet of being the female Amitabh Bachan of industry. Hum Apke Hain Kaun has been the greatest blockbuster in history. She won the FilmFare award, Best Actress, for her power packed performance. Success of HAHK was followed by success of Raja and by the mid nineties; Madhuri had etched her name in golden letters as the greatest actress of Bollywood.

Mahima Chaudhry

Name: Mahima Chaudhry
Birthday: Thursday, September 13, 1973
Star Sign : Virgo
First Film : Pardes

BIOGRAPHY

Mahima Chaudhry (born 13 September 1973), whose real name is Ritu Chaudhry, is a popular Indian actress.

Mahima Chaudhry was a model before she became a Bollywood actress, once appearing with Aishwarya Rai in a Pepsi commercial. Her first breakthrough performance, where she won rave reviews, was Pardes (1997) as Ganga, the love interest of two men played by Shah Rukh Khan and Apoorva Agnihotri. The role of Ganga was a village girl who still values her culture. She was chosen to be the female lead among about 3,000 applicants who auditioned for Pardes. Her career was launched by Subhash Ghai who had also launched the careers of popular actresses like Madhuri Dixit and Manisha Koirala. She changed her name to Mahima Chaudhary since Subhash Ghai has a superstitious belief of launching big careers with actresses whose names start with the letter 'M'.

Unlike most top actresses in India, Chaudhry did not mind playing a second fiddle in films like Dhadkan (2000) and Dil Kya Kare (1999). Apart from her role in Pardes, she also won acclaim for her role as Kavita, the loving wife of a man (played by Ajay Devgan) in Dil Kya Kare. She was nominated for Filmfare Awards for that role. She was a close friend of Leander Paes, the popular Indian tennis player. Mahima left Leander after he was linked with Rhea Pillai (ex-wife of Sanjay Dutt).
In order to acquire the tag of India's sex symbol, Mallika Sherawat has virtually dropped her clothes. Earlier known as Reema Lamba, she started out as a small-time model and actress from Delhi, before she re-christened herself Mallika Sherawat.

A small-town girl (from Rohtak in Haryana), Mallika always had stars in her eyes and was determined to pursue the glamour profession and give it all it took to make it. Even though her conservative father was dead against her decision, Mallika defied his wishes and moved to Mumbai to carve a niche for herself in the big bad world of showbiz. Very few would know that she not only defied her father’s wishes, but also walked out of her marriage with Jet Airways pilot Captain Karan Singh Gill in Delhi to pursue her dream. Mallika, then called Reema, had married Karan soon after she completed her graduation from Miranda House, Delhi University and was working as a part time airhostess.

With good reason, Mallika displayed enough skin to make her one of the 'hottest' actresses in the Hindi film industry today. Mallika debuted in a small role in Vashu Bhagnani's Jeena Sirf Mere Liye, but it was Khwahish and her dare bare attitude with co-actor Himanshu Mallik that brought her fame in Bollywood.

At 21, Mallika was on the cover page of an international magazine, Snoop, and the Indian edition of Cosmopolitan. And all this before her debut film had even hit the marquee. Truly outstanding for a girl, who does not come from a famous film family and has no godfather.

Then Mahesh Bhatt's thriller Murder directed by Anurag Basu has put Mallika in an unconventional act. A story of a lonely married woman having an affair, the film had shades of celebration, of blossoming passion, love and insecurity. Murder became the top grosser of 2004 raising Mallika’s popularity immensely, this time people were taking note of her acting skills along with the bold scenes in the movie.

While the publicity machinery going berserk promoting Mallika’s next film Kiss Kiss Ki Kismat as a sizzling sexually simmering synthesis of the two Jat actors Dharmendra and Mallika Sherawat, the fact is the twosome play father-in-law and daughter-in-law in the film.

Barely two films old, Mallika has not only established herself in Bollywood, she is also going international having bagged Jackie Chan’s next film The Myth (earlier titled Time Breaker). Audacious, vulnerable, and with tons of oomph, Mallika has the code to hack the 'Succeed in Bollywood' password.

This girl from Harayana has surprised everyone by her immense and immediate success. If media attention is the barometer of stardom then Mallika Sherawat is by far the biggest star of Bollywood at the moment. The print medium and its visual counterpart are busy lapping up every pearl of wisdom that the ‘Murder Mademoiselle’ utters. She knows how to shock, and…well…the Indian middleclass loves to be shocked.

BIOGRAPHY

Manoj Bajpai a passionate lover of theatre full of fury and raw energy hails from Bilwa in Bihar. Manoj Bajpai was born on 3rd April. He has earned his acting credentials doing theatre (was rejected thrice by the National School of Drama). He is the actor who is known for his acting sensibilities.

Manoj's ambitions and dreams to make his place under the arc lamps drove him from a sleepy town in Bihar to work his way up from TV roles to small character roles in films like Bandit Queen. Pooja Bhatt spotted him for her film Tamanna where again he went unnoticed. Even after his first few films he was not a Known actor as far as the audiences were concerned. And then Satya happened and Manoj became synonymous with just one name 'Bhiku Mhatre'.

Being a stickler for variety Manoj has always dug the roles that offer him the scope to convey myriad emotions. He showed his hand at comedy in Hansal Mehta's dark comedy Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar and his subtle Land resisted performance in Zubeidaa just adds another feather to his cap. This man has the dream of working with Martin Scorcese and with the kind of adulation and fanfare he has now, the day should not far enough.

He has won another applause for his finely etched performance in Pinjar. In LoC also his work is appreciated.

His other forthcoming projects are Mehul Kumar's Jaago, Makrand Deshpande's Hannan, Pankuj Parasher's Inteqam, Dharmesh Darshan's Bewaffa.

Mithun Chakraborty

Name: Mithun Chakraborty
Birthday: Monday, June 16, 1947
Star Sign : Gemini
First Film : Mrigayaa as Tribal Hunter

BIOGRAPHY

Mithun Chakraborty (June 16, 1947) (original name Gouranga Chakraborty) is a leading actor in the Bollywood. He was born in Chennai and educated at the Scottish Church College, Calcutta, where he studied chemistry. He graduated from the Film and Television Institute of India. He started his film career in a Bengali film made by Mrinal Sen. He shot into national prominence with his films Disco Dancer, Agneepath and was at one time, regarded as a rival to Amitabh Bachchan.

Mithun not only achieved a lot of commercial success but also tremendous critical acclaim (winning National Awards thrice), for his performances in his first film Mrigaya as well as for Bengali films Tahader Katha and Ramakrishna Paramhans), Mithun's statements evidence the humility of one who has 'come up the hard way'.

During the mid 1990s he shifted his focus from the mainstream cinema and went into developing his own movies. These movies were mainly targeted towards people whose social status can at best be described as modest.

He tried to pull out an industry out of this. Initially, he was successful, no doubt, but to have a sustained growth and returns he now needs to pull some other rabbit out of his hat.

In his heyday, earned a huge fan following as a 'dancing star', one who runs a parallel film industry from his South Indian abode of Ooty, is 'God' for a generation of audiences unaware of the Hrithik Roshan and the Sanjay Dutt of this world, who owns an entire chain of hotels in Ooty and one who, was the highest tax payer in the country for five consecutive years, from 1994 to 1999. He has done and continues to do social service all over India.

BIOGRAPHY

Mohammed Rafi (December 24, 1924 - July 31, 1980) is probably the most famous Hindi playback singer of yesteryears. He was born at Kotla Sultan Singh village near Amritsar in Punjab, now in Pakistan to a middle class Muslim family. His songs are still listened to all over the world. People from various nations from India to Kenya to UK to West Indies were won over by his sweet warm melodies.

Along with Lata Mangeshkar, he shares the record for having sung the greatest number of songs, approximately 26,000 during his film career spanning 40 years (from 1940 to 1980). Rafi has also sung a large number of songs with Geeta Dutt and Asha Bhonsle.

His songs ranged from classical numbers to patriotic songs, sad lamentations to highly romantic numbers, qawaalis to ghazals and bhajans, and from slow melancholic tunes to fast fun filled songs. He had a strong command of Hindi and Urdu and a powerful range that could accommodate this variety.

He sung for Rajendra Kumar and Jeetendra, the tragedy heroes, Dilip Kumar and Bharat Bhushan, and comedian Johnny Walker. His voice personified the rebellious image of the star, Shammi Kapoor and also gave expression to smaller and younger heroes like Biswajit and Joy Mukherjee . Rafi has also sung for singer-actor Kishore Kumar in a few movies like Raagini, Baaghi Shehzaada, and Shararat. The credit for his singing is usually given as Mohd. Rafi.

At the age of 14, Rafi moved to Lahore and learned Indian classical music from Ghulam Ali Khan . Rafi started imitating his idol G. M. Durrani and became a playback singer.

Rafi's first song was in Punjabi for the film Gul Baloch - it was a duet with the singer Zeenat Begum. The song was 'Soniye nee, Heeriye nee', composed by Shyam Sunder. Shyam Sunder was impressed with his voice and gave Rafi seven songs in another film Bazaar. Rafi's talent was noticed by composer Firoz Nizami, who found him a job at Radio Lahore. Rafi's first hit song was 'yaha badla wafa ka', composed by Firoz Nizami. It earned Rafi great fame. Producer of film 'Amar Raj', J B Wadia went looking for him because he wanted only Rafi to sing songs for his film.

Rafi also did brief roles in movies like Laila-Majnu (1945) and Jugnu. In Laila-Majnu, he was seen singing 'tera jalwa' as a part of the chorus.

Mukesh *

Name: Mukesh *
Birthday: Sunday, July 22, 1923

BIOGRAPHY

Mukesh Chand Mathur (formal name Zoravar Chand), popularly known as Mukesh, referred to as the man with the golden voice, was one of the finest Indian playback singers along with Mohammed Rafi and Kishore Kumar. Mukesh's voice was noticed by Motilal (a popular actor in Hindi films, also a distant relative of Mukesh) when he sang at his sister's wedding. Motilal took him to Bombay, let him stay with him and even arranged for singing lessons for him. During this period, Mukesh managed to bag a role in a Hindi film, Nirdosh (Innocent) (1941). He got his break as a playback singer in 1945 with the film Pehli Nazar (First Look). The first song he sang for a Hindi film was Dil Jalta Hai to Jalne De (If the heart burns, let it burn) , which was incidentally picturised on Motilal. He is best known for the songs he sang as a playback singer for Raj Kapoor, a legendary actor/director of Bollywood in 1950s and 1960s. In 1974, Mukesh received a National Award for the song Kain baar yoon bhi dekhaa hai from Rajnigandha (1974), and Filmfare Awards for the songs Sab Kuch Seekha in the movie Anari (1959), Ganga Ram Ki Samajh in Pehchaan (1970), Jai Bolo in Be Imaan (1972) and Kabhie Kabhie in the film of the same name (1976). He died of a heart attack on August 27, 1976 in Detroit, Michigan, USA where he had gone for a concert. His body was carried back to India with Lata Mangeshkar, where a grand funeral ceremony took place as many famous actors, personalities of the Indian film industry, and fans paid tribute to the late singer. When the news of his death reached Raj Kapoor, he remarked that he had lost his soul, which is a testimony to the timeless and unforgettable association of Mukesh's voice (in playback) to the immensely popular songs of Raj Kapoor's films. After Mukesh's death, his newer unreleased songs came out in 1977 with films like Dharam Veer, Amar Akbar Anthony, Khel Khilari Ka, Darinda, and Chandi Sona. The year 1978 also featured a good number of Mukesh songs , films like Aahuti, Paramatma, Tumhari Kasam, and Satyam Shivam Sundaram, where Mukesh sang his last film song "Chanchal Sheetal Nirmal Komal." From 1980 onward, Mukesh's voice was heard in many late films like Shaitan Mujarim, Premika, Patthar Se Takkar (1980), Sanjh Ki Bela, Maila Anchal (1981), Aarohi (1982), Chor Mandali (1983), Nirlaj (1985), Love and God (1986), Shubh Chintak (1989), and his last known release of Chand Grahan (1997). Mukesh's son, Nitin Mukesh, was a fairly popular singer in the 1980s and sings mostly devotional religious songs these days.

Nadeem-Shravan

Name: Nadeem-Shravan
First Film : Dangal

BIOGRAPHY

Nadeem-Shravan (sometimes credited as Nadeem Shravan) is a music director duo in the Bollywood film industry of India. The duo derives its name from the first names of its two principals, Nadeem Saifi and Shravan Rathod.

Nadeem-Shravan are arguably the most successful music directors of the 1990s. They are known for their catchy songs that feature a strong rhythm (often accentuated by Latin percussion instruments) and great melodies. Major Hindi playback singers such as Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnik, Kumar Sanu, Anuradha Paudwal, and many others have sung under their baton.

Nadeem and Shravan met in 1972 at a function and decided to get together as a composer duo. Their first film was 'Dangal in 1979' but nothing much came of it. They then composed the music for the hit films Ilaka, Hisaab Khoon Ka, and Lashkar; however, while the films were great, the music was not talked about much.

Nadeem-Shravan's fortunes changed forever with the release of director Mahesh Bhatt's Aashiqui (1990). This film made mega-stars out of Nadeem-Shravan and singer Kumar Sanu, and won Nadeem-Shravan their first Filmfare Best Music Director Award. Aashiqui remains to this day the highest-selling Bollywood film soundtrack of all time.

1991 saw Nadeem-Shravan continue to rise with Lawrence D'Souza's Saajan (for which they won their second Filmfare Award) and another collaboration with Mahesh Bhatt in Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin. Sadak and Phool Aur Kaante proved to be two other hit scores for them in 1991. In 1992, they provided the music for Shah Rukh Khan's film debut, Deewana, for which they won a third Filmfare Award. In 1993, they scored Mahesh Bhatt's Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke, written by Aamir Khan and starring Aamir and Juhi Chawla.

In 1997, the team ran into some negative publicity when Nadeem, while on vacation in London, England, was named as a suspect in the murder of his former mentor, record executive Gulshan Kumar (the boss of T-Series Music Company), back in India. His passport became revoked and he was forced to stay in England until the crisis passed. Today, Nadeem still remains in the UK and, despite the immense geographical distance between England and India, he and Shravan continue to make fantastic music together.

In the latter half of the 1990s and into the 2000s, Nadeem-Shravan continued to score the music for the movies of the most popular Bollywood film directors, such as Subhash Ghai (Pardes, 1997), Dharmesh Darshan (Raja Hindustani, 1996, Dhadkan, 2000), and Dharmesh's brother Suneel Darshan (Ek Rishtaa, 2001 and Barsaat, 2005). They won their fourth Filmfare Best Music Director Award for Raja Hindustani, as well as a Screen Award, and Pardes netted them another Screen Award. Their score for Raaz in 2002 won them a Zee Cine Award.

Working with the Darshans has proven to be worthwhile for Nadeem-Shravan, since their most recent musical score 'Dosti-Friends Forever' allows their successful compositions to continue to rule the charts today.

Today, though, the actress feels that love seems to be evading her constantly and she is yet to fall in love after that.

South Indian cinema seems to be very interested in Nandita. She has received many, many offers in Telugu and Tamil but she says that none of the roles is interesting

Naseeruddin Shah

Name: Naseeruddin Shah
Birthday: Thursday, July 20, 1950
Star Sign : Cancer
First Film : Nishant

BIOGRAPHY

Born in 1950 and educated at the National School of Drama in Delhi, Naseeruddin Shah is now one of the icons of New Indian Cinema along with Smita Patil, Shabana Azmi and Om Puri; indeed, he is arguably one of the finest actors in the world today, though the nature of world culture is such that the most mediocre American actors are more widely known around the world. Though his use of hesitant speech and casual gesture to signify psychological complexity sets him apart from mainstream actors, he has gained a fair amount of success in commercial cinema too.

Like many of the other actors of his genre, Naseeruddin Shah was first noticed by Shyam Benegal. He acted in Benegal's Nishant (1975), Manthan and Bhumika (1976). One of his most intense performances was given in Saeed Mirza's Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyon Aata Hai ("What makes Albert Pinto angry?", 1980). In the movie, he plays a garage mechanic from Goa who dreams of the expensive cars that he repairs but that are far beyond his reach. The film is set in a Catholic setting, primarily because Mirza did not have the courage to tackle Muslim issues. Naseeruddin Shah has also acted for other New Indian Cinema directors including Mrinal Sen (Khandan, 1983) and Sai Paranjpye (Sparsh, 1979). Besides these "serious" roles, he has a penchant for comedy.

His roles in Ketan Mehta's films and also in films like Mandi, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron, and Mohan Joshi Hazir Ho! (1983), have endeared him to the Indian public. He has also not shied away from accepting roles in mainstream Hindi movies where he has played a variety of characters, though his slight frame has ensured that he is most often cast in a comic role. However, directors also utilize his great acting talent when a "character role" has to be played. What is surely most arresting about him is the sheer versatility of his talent. Naseeruddin Shah has also played and directed English and Hindi plays. This is not unimportant, since many of the most brilliant film actors came to the cinema after a long stint as theater actors. With his wife Ratna Pathak, Naseeruddin Shah continues to act regularly in plays, often at Shashi Kapoor's Prithvi Theatre.

Neelam

Name: Neelam
Birthday: Monday, November 09, 1970
Star Sign : Scorpio
First Film : Jawani

BIOGRAPHY

Neelam Kothari is an Actress, VJ, TV Anchor. made a forgettable debut in "Jawani" years back. Her cute doll like looks and endearing speech soon made people sit up and notice her. Neelam and Govinda were a rage as an on screen couple in the late eighties. Some creditable perfomances by Neelam Kothari are in "Ilzaam", "Agneepath", "Khudgarz", "Ghar Ka Chiraag", "Aag Ka Gola", "Ek Ladka Ek Ladki", "Hum Saath Saath hain" and a cameo in "Kuch Kuch Hota hai".

Neelam had just completed her tenth standard and come down to Mumbai for the annual vacations when she was spotted by film-maker Ramesh Behl. He used to stay in the same building and one day he saw her playing with the building kids one of whom was his daughter Nano, and decided he wanted this dewy-eyed teenager in his next film, Jawani. The Kotharis, Shishir and Parveen, were avid Hindi film buffs and never missed out their Sunday afternoon movie sessions, but surprisingly they hated the idea of seeing their daughter on screen. "She's too young," growled Shishir when Behl popped the question, and whisked his baby away to Bangkok. But Behl wouldn't give up. He kept calling and renewing his offer till finally an exasperated Shishir put the question before his daughter who burst out laughing at the thought of acting in a Hindi film when she couldn't even speak the language properly. "Impossible! Out of question!" she giggled, and set her dad's mind to rest.

A couple of weeks later the subject came up for discussion again. And this time it was Neelam who raised it. She was finding it hard to cope with the American system of education in Bangkok after Hong Kong's "A" and "O" levels. Films could be her escape route from the endless mugging, she decided, and told her dad that she wanted to take a shot at acting. "Never!" he roared.

However, the next time Neelam was in Mumbai for the holidays she told Ramesh Behl that she was ready for a screen test. And to her surprise found that she liked having her face made up and facing the camera. It was so easy. Ramesh uncle only wanted her to look to the left… and then to the right. And that was it. "You're my next heroine," he told her, and before she knew it Neelam was shooting for Jawani with Karan Shah.

Neelam had thought acting would be a cakewalk. Amitabh Bachchan who was her hero and whose films she never missed, had made it look so easy. But it wasn't long before she discovered that it could be just as painful as schoolwork, more so because Ramesh uncle insisted on her learning Hindi. Neelam drove away five tutors but he couldn't be deterred. She had to learn Hindi. And she did. Fortunately, for Jawani she didn't have to dub her own lines but she had to smile and sigh, croon and cry, dance and dream on screen and she managed to do all that and more, surprising her parents who couldn't believe that their once-shy daughter had undergone such a miraculous metamorphosis.

Even Neelam was surprised to see herself open up so beautifully before the camera and by the time the film was over she had grown to love Mumbai and even enjoy acting even though shedding gylcerine tears before the camera could be quite difficult. But then the unexpected happened. Jawani flopped. And there were no takers for the pert little miss and her anglicized accent in wonderland. With a heavy heart Neelam packed her bags and prepared to return to Bangkok and boring studies. But before she could be whisked off again by her parents, Pranlal Mehta came along with Love '86. It was another escape route. On the sets of Love '86 Pehlaj Nihalini saw Neelam and Govinda dancing together and signed them for Ilzaam. And the rest, as they say, is box-office history.

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan*

Name: Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan*
Birthday: Wednesday, October 13, 1948

BIOGRAPHY

Nusrat was born in Faisalabad, Punjab on October 13, 1948 to Ustad Fateh Ali Khan, a distinguished musicologist, vocalist, instrumentalist, and skilled Qawwali performer. He had one brother, Farrukh Fateh Ali Khan. Initially, his father did not want Nusrat to follow him into the Qawwali business. He had his heart set on Nusrat choosing a much more respectable career path and becoming a doctor, because he felt Qawwali artists had low social status. However, Nusrat showed such an aptitude for, and interest in, Qawwali that his father finally relented and started to train him in the art of Qawwali and he was also taught to sing within the classical framework of Khayal. This training was still incomplete when Ustad Fateh Ali Khan died in 1964 while Nusrat was still in school, and the training was continued by Nusrat's paternal uncle, Ustad Mubarak Ali Khan. Ten days after his father's death, Nusrat had a dream where his father came to him and told him to sing, touching his throat. Nusrat woke up singing, and was moved by the dream to decide that he would make Qawwali his career. His first public performance was at his father's funeral ceremony forty days later. Under the guidance of Ustad Mubarak Ali Khan, he became the group's leader in 1965 and the group was called Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Mujahid Mubarak Ali Khan & Party ("party" is the term used in Qawwali for the supporting members of the group).

Nusrat's first public performance as leader of the family Qawwali group was in March 1965, at a studio recording broadcast as part of an annual music festival called Jashn-e-Baharan organized by Radio Pakistan. It took Nusrat several years more to perfect his craft and emerge from the shadow of the groups that were regarded as the leading contemporary Qawwals. But once he did, there was no looking back. He firmly established himself as the leading qawwal of the 20th century. His incredible voice and his complete mastery of the genre made him a superstar in the Islamic world, especially in Pakistan and India. He sang in Urdu and his native Punjabi, as well as Persian. He was also one of the first South Asian singers to perform before large Western audiences.

Nusrat took over his family's qawwali party in 1971 after the death of his father and his uncle. In Pakistan, his first major hit was the song "Haq Ali Ali" (listen here). This was performed in a traditional style and with traditional instrumentation, and featured only sparse use of Nusrat's innovative sargam improvisations. Nevertheless the song became a major hit, as many listeners were attracted to the timbre and other qualities of Nusrat's voice.

He reached out to Western audiences with a couple of fusion records produced by Canadian guitarist Michael Brook. In 1995, he collaborated with Eddie Vedder on the soundtrack to Dead Man Walking. His contribution to that and several other soundtracks and albums (including The Last Temptation of Christ and Natural Born Killers), as well as his friendship with Peter Gabriel, helped to increase his popularity in Europe and the United States. Peter Gabriel's Real World label released five albums of Nusrat's traditional Qawwali performances in the West. He also performed traditional Qawwali live to Western audiences at several WOMAD world music festivals.

Apparently, when Nusrat toured in foreign countries, he would watch television commercials in order to identify the melodies and chord progressions popular in that country. He would then try to choose similar sounding songs from his repertoire for his performances.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan holds the world record for the largest recorded output by a Qawwali artist—a total of 125 albums.

Nusrat was taken ill with kidney and liver failure on Monday, August 11, 1997 in London, England while on the way to Los Angeles from Lahore to receive a kidney transplant. While still at Cromwell Hospital, Nusrat died of a sudden cardiac arrest on Saturday, August 16, 1997, aged 48. His body was then transported back to Faisalabad, Pakistan where thousands of distraught people attended his funeral and burial procession

Pankaj Awasthi

Name: Pankaj Awasthi

BIOGRAPHY

With the upsurge of Sufi music in the Indian pop scene, you might almost mistake Pankaj Awasthi as yet another Sufi singer trying to ride it out to fame, till you look closely. The Delhi-based singer, lyricist and composer has recently released his new album `Nine' that has but of course nine songs ranging from love ballads to those that brandish the olive branch. Interestingly, however, unlike many others, Awasthi is not merely jumping on the bandwagon, but is one of the few who have been singing and writing sufi music for over a decade albeit in relative anonymity.

Ask about his album and he talks passionately about his first song `Khuda' which is currently airing on music channels. Created as a need to pen his heartfelt emotions at the time of the Babri demolition, he wrote the song unaware that it would later be categorized as Sufi. Preferring to call his songs as contemporary music, Awasthi got his first taste of success as a singer when his composition became a hit as the title track of Harry Baweja's mid-year release Karam that starred Priyanka Chopra and John Abraham. With the mainstay of his music being catchy tunes, easy hook lines and bluesy guitars he also experiments with Electronic Folk music as a part of the band duo Mili Bhagat. A self-trained musician with no formal training Awasthi's has made the best of his talent and picked much up from music magazines and websites and later by arranging and sequencing music for bigger bands such as Indian Ocean.

Parveen Babi*

Name: Parveen Babi*
Birthday: Monday, April 04, 1949
Star Sign : Aries

BIOGRAPHY

She was born in Junagadh and did her early schooling in Aurangabad. She did her college at St. Xavier's College, Ahmedabad. Her father Vali Mohammed Babi, a Gujarati muslim, was an administrator with the Nawab of Junagadh. Babi was born fourteen years after the marriage of her parents and was the only child. She was one of the most successful Bollywood actresses in the 1970s and was known for her portrayal of strong women who did not care about the conventional norms of society. In her most successful films, she was paired opposite Amitabh Bachchan who was one of the biggest stars of the decade. Often compared with her contemporary Zeenat Aman due to their common image of being Westernized beauties, Babi can be considered more ethereal when compared to the more earthly Zeenat. In her films like Deewar (1975), Shaan (1980) and Namak Halaal (1982) her screen presence maybe minimal (the films largely working around the hero) but Babi brought a certain attractive aloofness to the role or the song she appeared in. A tragic sensibility seems to pervade her seemingly impassive performances (her work in Namak Halaal is a case in point). Babi also acted in offbeat films like Vinod Pandey's Yeh Nazdeekiyan (1982). Her success did not run into the next decade and she left the film industry to move to New York in 1983. Here she became associated with the spiritual philosopher U.G. Krishnamurthy. She returned to Mumbai in 2002 where she was unrecognizable as her former self after having put on a considerable amount of weight. She accused many foreign dignitaries and former co-star Amitabh Bachchan of conspiracy to kill her but her petition in court was dismissed for lack of evidence. She also filed an affidavit in the special court hearing the 1993 serial bomb blasts case, claiming that she had evidence to show, but she did not turn up in court after being summoned saying that she was afraid of being killed. [1] Parveen Babi may have suffered from schizophrenia and had become a recluse in the last years of her life. She never married but had close relationships with director Mahesh Bhatt and actors Kabir Bedi and Danny Denzongpa. Mahesh Bhatt made Arth (1982), a semi-autobiographical film on his relationship with Babi. She was found dead in her Mumbai apartment on January 22, 2005 after her residential society secretary complained to the police that she had not collected milk and newspapers from her doorstep for the past two days. The police ruled out any foul play. She was buried next to her mother at Santa Cruz in Mumbai on January 23. She is the first Indian actress who featured on TIME magazine's cover.

Preeti Jhangiani

Name: Preeti Jhangiani
Birthday: Monday, August 18, 1980
Star Sign : Leo
First Film : Mazhavillu

BIOGRAPHY

Preeti Jhangiani (born 18 August 1980) is an Indian actress and model.

She first did films down south but made her Bollywood debut in 2000 with Mohabbatein. The film starred Amitabh Bachchan and Shahrukh Khan as well as five other debutantes (Shamita Shetty, Uday Chopra, Jugal Hansraj, Kim Sharma and Jimmy Shergill). The film was a huge hit and started her film career. Her next hit was the comedy Awara Paagal Deewana, but she did not really have much of a role. Succeeding films -- of which she made many -- did less well at the box office.
Preeti Jhangiani was first seen in Rajshri music videos, Chui mui si opposite South superstar Abbas. Her elfin face and innocent looks won hearts of millions. Her on screen chemistry with Abbas made them both look extremely desirable to such an extent that the duo became love icons and the koala bear became a symbol of love all around.

After that, the Chui Mui girl was seen in umpteen TV commercials most famous being Nirma Sandal soap in which, she replaced Sonali Bendre. She even did a Malayalam film, Mazhivillu, directed by Dinesh Babu, which was critically acclaimed, but didn't do too well.

Preeti debuted in Bollywood with Aditya Chopra’s Mohabbatein. Though her launch was rather unconventional, she played the role of a young widow of 17, her performance was appreciated. She shared the frame with Bollywood idols like Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan, which was a dream come true for a newcomer. For this model turned actress who loves romantic films, Mohabbatein was the ultimate love story.

Post Mohabbatein, Preeti was seen in movies like Awara Pagal Deewana, Waah! Tera Kya Kehna, Annarth and Baaz. All of these haven’t done quite well at the box office. But you can't blame Preeti for being thrilled. Still she is working with directors like Feroz Nadiawala, Mahesh Manjrekar, Vikram Bhatt and Pahlaj Nilhani. It is being muted that in her next film Chaahat - Ek Nasha, she has the longest steamy love scenes with Aryan Vaid.

Preeti has been linked to Mushtaq Nadiadwala, Aftab Shivdasani and model Gautam Rodha.

Prem Chopra

Name: Prem Chopra
Birthday: Wednesday, September 23, 1970
First Film : Mud Mud Ke Na Dekh

BIOGRAPHY

Contrary to his name Prem (Love), his persona exuded hatred, lecherousness and intrigue galore on the silver screen. But for his brilliant portrayals of villainous characters, who would have recognized the heroic renderings of such megastars as Amitabh, Rajesh Khanna, Shatrughan or Dharmendra?

Prem Chopra, the archetypal bad man was born in Lahore (in undivided India) and brought up at Shimla. His father wished him to be a medico but early in age, Chopra Jr realised that his destiny lay elsewhere. He vigorously pursued performing arts in College and graduated from Panjab University.

A Bachelor's degree was able to fetch him a job at Times of India in the late 50's at Bombay. As he had an inbuilt flair for acting, he never stopped visiting studios and presenting his credentials to known producers of those times. But goddess luck eluded him, till he got a break in Chaudhary Karnail Singh (1962) -- a Punjabi film set in pre-partition times. Prem Chopra proved his mettle as an actor. The film was a success and it won a National Award and gave Chopra the much-needed break. He could impress a few people in the industry and offers started spilling over to him.

Yet another commendable performance in a Punjabi film Sapni (1963) followed. In those early days someone rightly directed him to go for villainous roles. And there has no looking back ever since. He became the cold blooded demon of Bollywood – the typical villain, who could deceive, kill, rape or maim with an ease, with which an ordinary mortal goes about his daily chores. Spine chilling roles in Hindi films such as Woh Kaun Thi(1964), Shaheed (1965), Sikand-re-Azam (1965), Teesri Manzil(1966) and Purab Aur Passchim (1970) etc followed.

But it was only after the runaway success of Manoj Kumar's Upkaar (1967) that he had the confidence to bid adieu to TOI. With commendable performances in Kati Patang (1970), Himmat (1970), Gora Aur Kaala (1972), and Bobby (1973) -- Prem was shining like a star, albeit in a different realm. In the realm of evildom, where crime is a profession and the will of 'Satan' reigns supreme. Prem Chopra justified each and every aspect of the role of a villain. From wearing his white 'head to toe' dress to kill and murmuring threats in his low bass and nasal 'signature voice', Prem Chopra became a quintessential brand of vice. Not to forget the imitable tinge of humour, he would add to his blood curdling mannerisms. 'Master of innovation', Chopra would add a new element to each role and never really allowed himself to go out of vogue. Seventies and eighties were his heydays and a period of prolific filmmaking. Jheel Ke Us Paar (1973), Dream Girl (1977), Phaandebaaz (1978), Desh Pardesh (1978) Kala Pathar (1979), Ram Balram (1980), Kranti (1981), Naseeb (1981), Andha Kanoon (1983), Nagina (1986), Hukumat (1987), Majboor (1990) – there hardly was a flick in this time period, when the 'loving' Chopra didn't give the 'hero and his dame' a run for their money for almost two thirds of the reel and much to the relief of the audience eventually to be overpowered in the climactic scenes of last fifteen minutes. A veteran of over 400 hundred films, he continues to act till date. What would have Hindi cinema been without Prem Chopra – a day without light or more appropriately -- a night without darkness?

An extremely articulate and well-read man, Prem Chopra admires the acting skills of Marlon Brando and Dilip Kumar. Quite unlike what he would have done on the screen, Prem Chopra married Uma in 1969 and has been a caring and loving husband ever since. He is a proud father of three charming daughters -- Rakita, Punita and Prerana.

The celebrated author of the famous line 'Prem naam hai mera…Prem Chopra' has been decorated with Filmfare Award, Indira Gandhi Priya Darshini Award, Ashoka Award, Punjab Kala Sangram Award, besides many others.

May god give a long life to this man -- who is as much detested on screen, as he is adored off it!

Priyadarshan

Name: Priyadarshan
First Film : Saaza-E-Kaala Paani

BIOGRAPHY

Priyadarshan, is a popular Indian movie director. He hails from the state of Kerala, South India. He has directed numerous popular hit movies in Malayalam in the 1980s and 1990s.

Films were never Priyadarshan's first choice - he used to play a lot of cricket, but an injury to his left eye where a ball hit him ended his hopes of a career in cricket. There were many of his friends from Thiruvananthapuram who came to film industry. Mohanlal (Actor), M. G. Sreekumar (Singer), Suresh Kumar (Producer) are few among them.

Priyadarshan's father was a librarian in Thiruvananthapuram. He got oppotunity to read literary works of famous writers. He was fascinated by comics and fairy tales. That still reflects in his movies
Priyadarshan became film director by accident and the first movie (Poochakkoru Mookkuthi, Malayalam) became a block buster. Priyadarshan brought differnt outlook to comedy movies in Malayalam. He used slaptstick extensively in his films. He got tremendous support from Mohanlal who acted in most of his Malayalam films. Priyadarshan is one director who extracted maximum of Mohanlal in the humour stand point. The pair created blockbusters one after another. Their best work till date considered as Chithram (Malayalam, 1987) which made people laugh till end and brought tears finally.

Apart from Malayalam films he also directed Hindi, Tamil and Telugu movies. But the things were waiting for him in Hindi. Priyadarshan's entry in to Bollywood was not so encouraging. Muskurahat(1993) was his first Hindi film and no one noticed it. The success of the movie Gardish(1994) opened a new world in front of Priyadarshan. He made mulitilingul Kalapaani(1996) which told the story of freedom fighters in the backdrop of Andaman and Nicobar. It became as showcase for talented technicians from Malayalam to get noticed in national level. It bagged 4 National Awards. Including the awards for Santosh Sivan (Cinemotaography) and Sabu Cyril(Art Director).

People started noticing his Hindi movies. Virasat (1997) came. The film is a remake of the acclaimed Kamal Haasan starrer Thevar Magan (Tamil). It was remade in Hindi with the help of writer Vinay Shukla. It was well appreciated by critics and common man. Tabu (Actress), Ravi K Chandran (Cinemotography) and Anu Malik (Music) got recognition. Then it was Hera Pheri (2000) which went against the formula and became a huge hit. Hungama(2003)(remake of Poochakkoru Mookkuthi) , Hulchul(2004), Garam Masala(2005) followed. Actors wanted to work with him. Banners like Sahara One, Percept Picture Company, Venus, K Sera Sera wanted him as director. Priyadarshan is famous for his speed in finishing the shots. This was something new in Hindi cinema then where films used to take years to complete.

Most of Priyadarshan movies are rich with exotic visuals, songs and simple humour spread through. One of his most visually appealing works would be award winning 'Thenmavin Kombath' (Malayalam, 1994). It can be seen that in the middle of his career he was maturing more technically. This can be seen in Kilukkam(1991, Malayalam), Abhimanyu(1992, Malayalam) or Kaalapaani. Most of the times his technical team has N. Gopalakrishnan (Editor), S. Kumar (Cinemotography) and Sabu Cyril (Art Director).

All these movies were remakes of Tamil and Malayalam block busters. Till Priyadarshan's time remakes never used create the impact as its originals. He was creating his own territory. The movies which couldn't come to the expectations were Muskurahat, Kabhi Na Kabhi(1997), Doli Sajake Rakhna (1998), Yeh Tera Ghar Ye Mera Ghar(2002) and Kyonki(2005).

Priyadarshan won Kerala State Award for Best Director in 1995.

Priyadarshan met his wife, Malayalam actress Lisy, on the set of his second film. They have done 12 movies together, though she has quit acting now. They have two children.his daughter Kalyani and son Sidharth

BIOGRAPHY

Priyanka Mini Chopra (born July 18, 1982 in Jamshedpur, India) is an Indian film actress in Hindi films. She is the Miss World title holder for the year 2000. She was raised in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh.

Priyanka studied in Lucknow, Bareilly and Boston. After returning from Boston she received a call to participate in the Femina Miss India pageant to which her parents had sent her photographs without her knowledge. At the contest, she won the title of Femina Miss India-World, thus winning the right to represent the country at Miss World. Incidentally all the three Miss India personalities of the pageant went on to win their respective titles for the year - Miss India Universe Lara Dutta became Miss Universe 2000 and Miss India Asia-Pacific Diya Mirza became Miss Asia-Pacific 2000. This was the first time the three titles in one year went to the same country.

Beauty pageants were banned in her conservative home state Uttar Pradesh the year she won the title, and she received death threats as well.

There were allegations that her Miss World title was rigged and that 1st runner-up Giorgia Palmas of Italy deserved to win instead, after a mistake made by Chopra in the final round was overlooked by the judges. Asked "Which living woman do you admire the most?" she replied, "Mother Teresa", Mother Teresa having died in 1997.

After winning the Miss World title, Priyanka moved to films. She appeared in several successful films, among them are Andaaz, Aitraaz and Mujhse Shaadi Karogi. In 2004, she was placed at number seven in the Filmfare Top Ten Actress' Listing, a rare accomplishment to earn at such a young age.

Rahat Fateh Ali Khan

Name: Rahat Fateh Ali Khan

BIOGRAPHY

Qawwali, the mystical music of Indian and Pakistani Sufism, is rooted in song forms that are over 700 years old. Qawwali songs are devotional songs that extol Islamic virtues and shower praise upon Allah. Qawwali is intended to affect heightened spirituality through ritualized listening known as Sama. The transcendent nature of the poetic lyrics, in combination with a vivacious musical base and the participatory act of Sama, stirs ecstatic feelings of mystical adoration among both performers and audience members alike. Undoubtedly the most popular qawwali singer of all time was the Pakistani-born Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Six weeks after his death in 1997, nephew Rahat Fateh Ali Khan assumed the qawwali helm. Rahat took Nusrat's first name in a traditional gesture of admiration of his master, and in so doing was officially recognized as the new leader of Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's group.

Born in Faisalabad, Pakistan, Rahat Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was selected at birth by his uncle for tutoring in the art of qawwali music. A precocious child, Rahat was singing at the age of three with his uncle and his father Farroukh Fateh Ali Khan, another respected qawwali singer. Rahat began formalized training with his uncle at the age of six. By age 15, Rahat officially joined his uncle's celebrated group.

Since becoming the head of the group, Rahat Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan has performed on a variety of recordings and has sung with Eddie Vedder at the Dead Man Walking Concert put on by Tim Robbins. He and his band continue to entrance world audiences with numerous shows around the globe. Rahat Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's self-titled release on American Recordings is his U.S. debut. Recorded in Santa Monica, CA, its four tracks are both emotionally charged and expertly performed. Producer Rick Rubin, of Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Beastie Boys fame, boosts Rahat's already potent sounds by cranking up the low end and placing the tabla way up in the mix.

Though Rahat is excited to play with Western pop musicians and lay down tracks in state-of-the-art studios, he is ultimately most concerned with the art of qawwali and its mystically imbued message. As he states, "qawwali music is not only music, it is a message. It was created by Sufis, and when we compose and practice this music, it stays forever. Other music comes and goes, but qawwali never goes. Once you start listening, it goes in your soul, goes in your spirit, and you become more human. I feel that this music is my duty, to go and give the message of Sufism. My future is that one day I will fulfill the desire of Nusrat to give this message to the world." ~ John Vallier, All Music Guide

BIOGRAPHY

Raj Kapoor (December 14, 1924 - June 3, 1988) was a legendary actor, director, and producer of Bollywood (Indian) movies.

Raj Kapoor began his career as a clapper boy assisting Kidar Sharma. At age eleven, he appeared in films for the first time, in the 1935 film Inquilab. Raj Kapoor's big break, however, came when he played the hero's role in Neel Kamal (1947) by Kidar Sharma. In 1948, at the age of twenty-four, he established his own studio, R. K. Films, and became the youngest film director of his time. His first movie as a director Aag (Fire) (1948) was an immediate success.

Raj Kapoor's career as director spanned the years from 1948 through 1988. He directed many films that are still remembered and loved, from Barsaat (1949) to Awaara (1951), Shri 420 (1955), and Sangam (1964). He starred in a number of the films he directed, often with actress Nargis, who was his real-life love interest.

After the box office failure of his ambitious 1970 film, Mera Naam Joker (My name is Joker), which took more than six years to complete, his movies took a sexy and determinedly crowd-pleasing turn. The film Bobby (1973) introduced Dimple Kapadia, later an Indian superstar, and was the first of a new generation of teen romances. By the restrictive if not puritan standards of commercial Hindi cinema, Kapadia appeared in suggestive, even sexually explicit, poses and scenes. Raj Kapoor trafficked in boundary-pushing sexuality in later films like Satyam Shivam Sundaram (1978) and Ram Teri Ganga Maili (1985).

Raj Kapoor suffered from asthma in his later years; he died of complications related to asthma in 1988 at sixty-three years of age.At the time of his death he was working on the movie Henna (an Indo-Pakistani love story). The film was later completed by his son Randhir Kapoor.

Raj Kapoor is appreciated both by film critics and ordinary film fans. Film historians and movie buffs speak of him as the "Charlie Chaplin of Indian cinema," since he often portrayed a tramp-like figure, who, despite adversity, was still cheerful and honest. His fame spread world-wide. He was adored by audiences in large parts of Africa, the Middle East and the former Soviet Union; his movies were commercial successes.

Many of Raj Kapoor's movies had a patriotic theme. His films Aag,Shri 420 and Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hein (In the Country Where the Ganges Flows) celebrated the newly independent India, and encouraged film-goers to be patriots.
The Kapoor family hailed from Samundri near the town of Lyallpur in present-day Pakistan. Raj Kapoor was born on 14th December 1924, at Peshawar in the North-West Frontier Province of what is now Pakistan. He was named Ranbirraj Kapoor at birth, and was the eldest of the four children of renowned stage and cinema actor Prithviraj Kapoor and his wife Smt. Ramsarni (Rama) Devi nee Mehra. His younger brothers were the actors Shammi Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor. He also had a sister by name Urmila Sial.

In 1946, at the age of twenty-two, Raj Kapoor was wed to Krishna Malhotra in a traditional family-arranged wedding. Krishna was Raj Kapoor's first cousin once removed, being his father's maternal uncle's daughter. Their eldest son Randhir was born the following year, followed by their elder daughter Ritu the year after, in 1948. The second son Rishi was born in 1952, and second daughter Rima in 1956. Their youngest son, Rajiv was born in 1962. Randhir, Rishi and Rajiv have all been associated with the Hindi film industry as actors, directors or producers.

Raj Kapoor is also known to have had a longtime romantic relationship with the renowned actress Nargis during the 1950s. The couple starred in several films together, including Awaara and Shri 420.

Noted film personalities Karisma and Kareena Kapoor are the granddaughters of Raj and Krishna Kapoor, being the daughters of their eldest son Randhir by his wife Babita.

Rajesh Khanna

Name: Rajesh Khanna
Birthday: Tuesday, December 29, 1942
Star Sign : Sagittarius
First Film : Akhri Khat

BIOGRAPHY

In the 60s there came an euphoria, a craze, a tidal wave which swept the entire genre of womankind with those naughty crinkling eyes, the stylish shake of the head and the enigmatic smile. It belonged to none other than superstar Rajesh Khanna, who later, with an amazing fan following, went on to create history of sorts in the Indian film industry.

Born in Amritsar, on 29th December 1942, Jatin Khanna (now Rajesh Khanna or `kaka` as he is affectionately called) was the adopted child of his parents and hence pampered right from the start. When the young Jatin expressed the desire to act, he became that rare newcomer who struggled in his own MG sports car! After doing theater, he was selected by the United Producers` Talent Contest.

Though Rajesh Khanna began his film career with inconsequential movies like Akhri Khat (1966) and Raaz (1967), but once Aradhna (1969) was released, he spread a frenzy in the masses that remained unfazed long after.

There was no obvious rationale for the Rajesh Khanna miracle. He didn`t really have the conventional good looks, yet the boy-next-door appeal and the charisma generated through his twinkling eyes and heady smile were enough to ensure the birth of a super-duper star.

He began his rule over the tinsel town when both his films Aradhana and Do Raaste ran simultaneously in the same year (1969), to become golden jubilee hits. A spate of stupendous hits like Safar, Sachcha Jhutha and Kati Patang followed within 1970. He could play the playful or the tragic romantic effortlessly with equal grace.

Khanna put an end to the Shammi Kapoor era, when he consolidated his position as the king of the box office by delivering a hat-trick of hits in 1971, in the form of Andaz, Anand and Amar Prem. Khanna immortalized himself through Anand when he played the poignant role of a determinedly cheerful chatterbox, living under the shadow of a fatal disease.

He was brilliant in Bawarchi (1972), Namak Haram (1973) Daag and Aan Milo Sajna (1973). Prem Nagar (1974) Aap Ki Kasam (1974) and Mehbooba (1976) also won him accolades.

With an appetite for creating headlines, he created a furore in the media by marrying the nubile Bobby girl Dimple Kapadia, overnight by separating from his longtime girlfriend Anju Mahendru. All the media focus was on him and anything that he did made hot news.

But then "Change happeneth to them all". The success by now had seemingly gone to his head, and thereafter, he was on the decline - both professionally and personally. Post-1974, though he starred in many movies, his era started to end with the onslaught of the new angry young man Amitabh Bachchan, who brought aggression and fire to the screen as against the romantic Rajesh with mannerisms that now looked jaded and repetitive. This was also followed by the split in his marriage with Dimple.

In a desperate attempt to regain his past glory he even tried pairing up with younger heroines like Sridevi, Padmini Kolhapure, Tina Munim who even happened to be his love interest for a long time, but all in vain. With a mix of flops and occasional hits like Thodi si Bewafai (1980), Agar Tum Na Hote (1983) Avtaar (1983), Souten (1983), he managed to survive.

But after that, he was seen less and less. He was appreciated in his final comeback vehicle Aa Ab Laut Chalen (1999) due to his subtle and polished performance. Meanwhile, both his daughters Twinkle and Rinkie Khanna too joined Bollywood.

He recast his career as a politician and won an election from a Delhi constituency to become an Member of Parliament. But later, his defeat in the next election disillusioned him further and recently he made a comeback in one of the serials on television, to reach a wider audience. Years may have passed, blockbusters may have happened, the film galaxy may have produced several other stars, but those who have seen him in his heydays still believe that there was or there still is no one like him.!!

Rajni kant

Name: Rajni kant
Birthday: Monday, December 12, 1949
Star Sign : Sagittarius

BIOGRAPHY

Is he merely a mega star? People unfamiliar with the intricate ways Tamil films, its popularity and its sway over politics would wonder.

Such is his clout over the Tamilians all over the world that many of them are more than happy to sacrifice their life for their hero of reel life! One would, for one’s intellectual boorishness, tend to dismiss it as classic case of hyper-emotions. But that is disdainful to meteoric rise of a bus conductor to super stardom and his unparalleled charisma, unrivalled mannerism, unmatched talents and uncanny knack of stirring the sentiments of millions. He is Shivajirav Gaikwad alias Rajnikant. The living legend of Tamil films.

An insightful film critic since childhood, Rajnikant also learned the finer nuances of cinema from Madras film institute. Though Katha Sangama was his debut film, it was Apoorva Ragaangal, directed by K Balachander, which brought him into limelight. He admits that K Balachander is his mentor as it was under his tutelage that he flourished as an actor.

A veteran of more than 150 films, Rajni, as he is popularly known, may not be a critics’ choice. But he essentially is mass’ choice. He may not match the histrionics of some of his contemporaries. But none of his contemporaries matches his superlative style of acting and action. His flipping a cigarette before he catches it in his mouth would send the masses in hysteric delight. He has an uncanny knack of delivering the dialogues, which are carefully worded to strike straight at souls of masses. Perhaps none in Indian cinema matches his acumen to reach out to the masses through dialogues and actions. No wonder he enjoys a peerless position not only in Indian cinema but in socio-cultural and political realm of Tamil Nadu as well.

Over the years he has outgrown the status of mega star. The phenomenal success of his latest flicks Bhasha, Muthu, Arunachalam, Padayappa, underlines that fact. In Mani Ratnam-directed Dalapati, he gave a fitting reply to those critics who doubted his range of histrionics.

Rajni is one of the few south Indian heroes who successfully crossed over to the North. Andha Kannon , Giraftarr, Chal Baaz , Gangwa etc speak for his success in Bollywood.

Of late, his stock of actions and idiosyncrasies has been a huge success abroad too. That his latest film Padayappa was sold to a Japanese distributor for a mind-boggling sum of 50,000$ is testimony to his popularity in Japan. This amount is termed to be highest amount any Indian film fetched for a commercial release.

He is rare phenomenon in terms of commercial success of films. Even Amitabh Bachchan, the super star of Indian cinema, has given flops. But Rajni’s films never flop in box-office. What is the secret of his enviable success? Critics attribute his success to his mysterious ability (whatever may be the role he enacts on the screen) to identify with the common folk.

In 1999, Rajni completed 25 years in cinema. The Government of Indian in recognition of his outstanding contribution conferred on him Padmabhushan the same year.
