BIOGRAPHY
Singer Sapna Awasthi, known for her raunchy songs,has carved a name for herself as a folk singer. She shot into limelight with her song perdesi pardesi in the film Raja Hindustani.Also it was the famous song Chaiyan Chaiyan that had gone through the roof in popularity charts taking Sapna also along with it.Also came ‘Banno teri akhiyan...’ and many more from films Shool , Dushmani , Janwar , Khauf , Jungle etc.
Daughter of a Sanskrit lecturer in Lucknow University , learnt hindustani classical music from bhatkhande sangeet mahvidyalaya. She has released a few albums Chakori , Chabili and Chaila.
Sapna had started professional singing in 1990 and had rendered her first film song ‘Banno Teri Ankhiyaan’ for film Dushmani. This had created the niche for her in the music industry. “However I enjoy live performances more then recording a song. My most memorable live performance happened in USA recently. I can sing in Telegu, Assamees, Bhojpur, Rajesthani, Nepali and Bengali to delight my fans,” she tells in the interview.
Now Sapna has come out with a new album ‘Kahin Diya Jale Kahin Jiya‘ that has 8 tracks. According to her the specialty of this album is that she has rendered “Pakistani Folk type of songs.” Although Sapna mostly sings Indian folk songs only, this is a first time experiment with Pakistani folk.
Besides singing Sapna also enjoys watching old films especially of Meena Kumari and Guru Dutt. In music too, her tastes are inclined more towards old melodious songs and she favors singers like melody queen Lata Mangeshkar and Noor Jahaan. And what does she look in people? “ Honesty and no ego.”
Sapna is married to Kartik Awasthi and they have their own drama company named the Awadh Theatre Group specialising in opera plays, for which Sapna composed, sang and also acted in sometimes.She is now set to enthrall the music lovers with her melodious voice and songs for the years to come....
