Some women have all the looks and talent. Take Sonali Rathod, for instance. She looks like a dream, and is a phenomenally talented singer. Life has blessed her with a wonderful husband as well. It can't be anything but joyful to have singer-composer Roop Kumar Rathod for your husband. The couple has gone from strength to strength during their years of marriage.

Recently, Sonali Rathod struck out on her own by releasing her album This is me. Zakir Hussein, a luminary in the music world in his own right, was the chief guest at the album release function. A galaxy of famous personalities including Leslie Lewis, actress Sonali Kulkarni, Hariharan, J.P. Dutta were present along with the Rathod couple, of course. The function told the world that the versatile singer, who had been assisting husband Rathod at songs, concerts and many musical events, was emerging as a musician in her own right. Till date, Sonali Rathod has contented herself to singing bhajans, ghazal pieces and folk numbers. This is Me showcases her talent for Indipop.

The album has been more than a surprise to her friends and critics alike. Why the sudden change in her more traditional style of singing? This is the road less traveled since classical music singers prefer to stick to their comfort zones, isn't it? Rathod confesses that she had always wanted to do something different. She wanted to be known for different styles of singing and what better way than to release a ‘popular music’ album? Besides, she says, it is important that trained singers like her pushed themselves to try genres and gain more recognition.

She maintains a strict daily routine of riyaaz which explains her sweet voice. No matter how senior or popular the singer is, it is vital to do daily riyaaz, she insists.
